A little confused! Options

I have been working with LEDs and noticed that there are two examples of wiring. First is the calculator refrence. It shows in parelle and in series that the resistor is on the neg end and on a other websites it shows that the resistor is on the positive end of the LED. Isn't the reason to use the resistor not to burn out the LEDs with to much current..? This is confusing me a little and don't want to burn up my LEDs. Thanks for any help!

It doesn't matter which side of the led the resistor is on as long as the led current
flows though the resistor! Suppose the resistor were a light switch. It doesn't matter
which pole of a lightbulb the switch is in. The only time it makes a differences is
with a transistor.
