I wish to produce an LED ring, that is not complete. Sorta like a horseshoe shape.

But i want it to be a single string of LED's that will light up in succession when power is turned on. So LED1 lights up first then two then three etc etc.

Is this possible? Thanks

Yes, digitally. With a digital circuit...Sorry, Leds don't work like gas discharge
neon bulbs for which there is a totally passive component solution for your request.

You could have a string of RC resistor capacitor delays working into small mosfet
transistors in a chain. A diode would pull each capacitor down as power supply
voltage dropped. The leds would be driven by the n-channel mosfet transistors. The
leds' pedestal voltage would have to be exceeded in the capacitor before the next
stage came on. The chain would be trying to turn all leds on eventually. This would
work.
